The song "Birdland" by Joe Zawinul for his band weather report is part of the band's album Heavy weather. This song is an example of jazz fusion, where musicians begin to combine jazz characteristics with other music genres like blues and in this case, rock. The use of electric instruments in the music is a characteristic of jazz fusion songs. If you have any recommendations or suggestions, please feel free to drop by here and let us know! This week, mutalk features "Goodbye Pork Pie Hat" as a part of the collection of jazz songs. The song "Goodbye Pork Pie Hat" is a song part of the Mingus Ah Um album by Charles Mingus. Mingus wrote this song as an elegy for saxophonist Lester Young who died 2 months prior recording of this song. This is one of his best known compositions, and other composers like Joni Mitchell and Rahsaan Roland Kirk. The use of dissonance expresses the pathos and pain of Mingus. Players improvise in the performances, making each performance a unique one. If you have any recommendations or suggestions, please feel free to drop by here and let us know! The song, "I put a spell on you" performed by Nina Simone, gave this classic a thrilling and classy love song. It has gone to be one of her most performed and well known songs, and the arrangement has given inspiration to many artists in later decades, such as the Beatles drawing inspiration for their song "Michelle". Muzé thanks Mr Miller from the Humanities department for recommending the song, and feel free to send in your suggestions for the jazz theme at [email protected]. Rhapsody in Blue, written by famous American composer George Gershwin and orchestrated by Fredre Grofé, is an iconic piece of heavily Jazz-influenced classical music. The piece was originally scored for jazz band and solo piano, but Fredre Grofé expanded the piece to larger orchestras twice to ensure its success. The first recording for full orchestra dates back in 1935 played by the Boston Orchestra. The piece is now recorded and perform regularly and is common repertoire for orchestras and pianists. American songwriter, Johnnny Mercer, wrote the lyrics in English later on and Jo Stafford was the first to perform the English version. The song was then covered and recorded by various artists dating from the 1950s and there are still recordings made of the song to this day. The song is in an AABC strucutre with a heavy jazz influence evident through the uses blues chords (using 7ths and 9ths), and the 2-5-1 sequences that are found often in jazz music. The song as well uses the chord progression of the circle of fifths throughout the majority of the piece.
