Rhapsody in Blue, written by famous American composer George Gershwin and orchestrated by Fredre Grofé, is an iconic piece of heavily Jazz-influenced classical music. The piece was originally scored for jazz band and solo piano, but Fredre Grofé expanded the piece to larger orchestras twice to ensure its success. The first recording for full orchestra dates back in 1935 played by the Boston Orchestra. The piece is now recorded and perform regularly and is common repertoire for orchestras and pianists. American songwriter, Johnnny Mercer, wrote the lyrics in English later on and Jo Stafford was the first to perform the English version. The song was then covered and recorded by various artists dating from the 1950s and there are still recordings made of the song to this day. The song is in an AABC strucutre with a heavy jazz influence evident through the uses blues chords (using 7ths and 9ths), and the 2-5-1 sequences that are found often in jazz music. The song as well uses the chord progression of the circle of fifths throughout the majority of the piece.
