4/15/2017 0 Comments Charles Ives Symphony No. 2Charles Ives was an American composer and was a prolific and important figure in 20th century classical music. Much of his music and writings were largely undiscovered until after his death. His second symphony was written between 1897 to 1901 but only given its premiere half a decade later. The piece is noted for its quotation of various popular American tunes like “Camptown Races”, “Turkey In The Straw” and “Columbia, The Gem Of The Ocean”. The symphony, while mostly tonal sounding, ends of with a surprise and dissonant “Bronx-cheer” chord. Ives often has tricks up his sleeves when he writes his music, inputing strange elements into his music. During the time many of his major works were written, Ives was way ahead of his time. Despite his works being relatively hard to conduct and perform due to the technicalities presented, Ives has played a significant role in 20th century classical music and his legacy will live on.
