It has gone to be one of her most performed and well known songs, and the arrangement has given inspiration to many artists in later decades, such as the Beatles drawing inspiration for their song "Michelle". The album was known as one of the best selling Jazz albums of all time and one of the most influential jazz albums. This song is an example of modal jazz, where chord progressions play a minor role in the harmony, and instead uses musical modes which is a type of scale to provide harmony. Players are also given scales which they use for their improvisation. Enjoy the piece below! 11/22/2017 0 Comments Rhapsody in blue - george GershwinWe will be continuing our jazz theme with the following piece, Rhapsody in Blue. American songwriter, Johnnny Mercer, wrote the lyrics in English later on and Jo Stafford was the first to perform the English version. The song was then covered and recorded by various artists dating from the 1950s and there are still recordings made of the song to this day. The song is in an AABC strucutre with a heavy jazz influence evident through the uses blues chords (using 7ths and 9ths), and the 2-5-1 sequences that are found often in jazz music. The song as well uses the chord progression of the circle of fifths throughout the majority of the piece. The new album features four new songs, with "Not Today" as well as "Spring Day" performed on stages in Korea. "Not Today" is an energetic synth-hiphop song with a steady pounding rhythm established throughout. It is a powerful song that calls for everyone to not give up, with the lyrics prompting people to unite and form a new world. 4/15/2017 0 Comments Charles Ives Symphony No. 2Charles Ives was an American composer and was a prolific and important figure in 20th century classical music. Much of his music and writings were largely undiscovered until after his death. His second symphony was written between 1897 to 1901 but only given its premiere half a decade later. The piece is noted for its quotation of various popular American tunes like “Camptown Races”, “Turkey In The Straw” and “Columbia, The Gem Of The Ocean”. The symphony, while mostly tonal sounding, ends of with a surprise and dissonant “Bronx-cheer” chord. Ives often has tricks up his sleeves when he writes his music, inputing strange elements into his music. During the time many of his major works were written, Ives was way ahead of his time. Despite his works being relatively hard to conduct and perform due to the technicalities presented, Ives has played a significant role in 20th century classical music and his legacy will live on.
